affordable housing - Tough nut to crack!

Affordable housing is such a tough nut to crack, so its really satisfying to be tackling it head on with a great team to build a new approach... and yes, its going to be prefabricated off-site!

We are currently working on an exciting new low-cost studio house project for a backyard site with no onsite access. The design combines two pavilions, 30m2 unit living/dining/kitchen with 10m2 bedroom unit. Cladding is a combination of multi-skin insulated polycarbonate panels, metal and plywood insulated panels and double glazed joinery orientated primarily north. It will be fully prefabricated at the Makers factory in Gracefield, Wellington and flat-pack delivered for rapid assembly on site.

CLICK-RAFT factory production

Exciting news - click-raft is being fabricated in partnership with Makers Fabrication at their Gracefield factory. We now have a number of orders on our books having successfully fabricated, delivered and assembled the studio at Ferry Road in Wellington, along with Makers own factory office and the exhibition click-raft for the PrefabNZ pavilion at BuildNZ/Designex 2015.

We are now fully set up to design, document (consent and construction), fabricate, deliver and assemble projects throughout New Zealand from the Gracefield factory with fully qualified builders to realise your projects on site.

Click-Raft Factory Visit at PrefabNZ Co-lab

A new 10m2 click-raft was fabricated and assembled for the new office at the Makers Factory over the weekend in time for the PrefabNZ Co-lab national conference - I've included a few photos below. Also great visit to Frazer Engineering factory (they make and export fire engines showing the huge potential for cross-over between automobile and construction fabrication). Brilliant conference with many diverse interesting speakers from Canada, USA, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, and included an address from the Minister for Building and Housing Nick Smith as well as from Phil Twyford Labour spokesperson for Housing and Construction. PrefabNZ has now been in operation for 5 years and couldn't be more relevant to tackle current challenges - Bucky would be impressed - Prefab's time has come!

Foundations and frame were put together over a couple of fun days during Chinese New Year. Cladding and door joinery followed. Had a ball putting it all together with a really great team - no crane or helicopter needed! :)
